Catching Fire #26

Catching Fire
Pg.368-379
5/22/11

Summary: The arena shows nine at night making it the time to set up Beetee’s plan. Katniss and her gang scurry over to the lightning tree; they have no time to spare. Beetee tells Katniss and Joanna to run the wire down to the sea after it is securely tied to the tree, but Peeta insists that he must go with Katniss to be a lookout. However, due to Peeta’s leg injury, he wouldn’t make it to the other side of the arena before the lightning storm at midnight. Katniss says goodbye to Peeta, and she alongside Joanna head for the sea. Although, things don’t go quite as planned, for when Katniss and Joanna are about half way down the jungle, somebody cuts the wire and Katniss finds herself stuck in what seems like a planned trap. Unfortunately for Katniss, this was a planned trap and as soon as she tries to get out of the coil, a metal cylinder finds the side of her head, and Katniss falls to the ground. The next Katniss remembers is waking up and Joanna is yelling at her to stay down. This is when it clicks to Katniss that there was a plan inside the lightning plan, and more importantly, Peeta is in danger. Once Joanna and two other blurred figures leave Katniss’s sight, she attempts to walk and save Peeta. Even though Katniss is moving very slow and acts as a big target, she manages to stumble her way to the lightning tree where she finds Beetee half dead laying on the ground. Katniss blacks out again, and this time she is awakened by loud footsteps coming straight for her. Katniss makes out the two figures to be Finnick and Enobaria and she uses the rest of her strength to load her bow and arrow. Katniss can hear Peeta screaming for her, but she screams even louder to keep Finnick and his new teammate coming for her, and not Peeta. However, instead of shooting the boys, Katniss shoots her arrow at the force field as the lightning bolt strikes the tree and for a second the whole arena dome burns a dazzling blue. Then Katniss is thrown to the ground and is paralyzed, unable to reach Peeta, and finds a beautiful star right before the explosion!

Catching Fire #25

Catching Fire
Pg.355-367
5/19/11

Summary: Katniss wakes up from her long rest in a very joyful mood which is unique for her. Unfortunately, Katniss’s dream land doesn’t last long as she is snapped back into reality when thinking of how long this alliance can last. Katniss comes to the understanding that she really doesn’t know why she and Peeta are teamed with these tributes. Katniss decides to tell Peeta about her new plan to split up from their alliance, but Peeta believes that they have to wake until the rest of the Careers are dead, otherwise he and Katniss would have two groups of tributes trying to kill them. Katniss agrees, partly because this is Peeta’s turn to win the Hunger Games, and because life is going well with her alliance. To make things better for the pack, Beetee has a plan to take out the two remaining Careers. After many hours a working with some wire, Beetee has the idea of tying his wire to the tree that always gets hit with a lightning bolt at noon/ midnight and having the electric current run down into the ocean where Beetee suspects the two other tributes to be. Although Beetee’s plan is brilliant, it does come at the cost of losing the sea as a source of food by electrifying all of inhabitants that live in the water. However, even though the loss of food will impact the gang, Katniss has also found an abundance of food in the jungle. In addition, even if Beetee’s plan doesn’t kill the remaining Careers, the two Careers will also loose the sea as a source of food. The alliance all agree on using Beetee’s plan and don’t waste any time getting to work. Katniss and the rest of her alliance walk to the same tree that repeatedly gets struck with lightning where Beetee checks out the tree. However, time is running out, and Joanna is starting to get worried that they won’t get out in time, but Katniss assures Joanna everything will be alright. Just as Katniss insisted, the pack gets out of the noon time zone with plenty of time to wait across the arena for noon where either Katniss and her alliance will be the only tributes left, or the plan doesn’t work, and the alliance will give away their location!

Catching Fire #24

Catching Fire
Pg.348-354
5/16/11

Summary: Katniss sprints towards her sister, Prim’s, scream. She is getting closer and closer but doesn’t see Prim. Katniss reaches a tree where her sister’s scram is coming from; however, when she looks up in the tree, Katniss only finds a small jabberjay. A moment later, there is another scream that instantly wakes Finnick up, and he goes on a run searching for his loved one before Katniss can convincel Finnick the scream is only a Jabberjay.  Finnick runs at least a half mile away from camp, only to find yet another Jabberjay. After, “At least a hundred Jabberjays”, as Katniss recalls, start screeching at the top of their lungs, scaring the heck out of Katniss and Finnick as the go into the fetal position waiting for the horror to pass. The cannon fires, signaling another death in the arena, and there is a sense of relief that brings the alliance back together after a long hour of horror. However, the pain was worth it, for now Katniss and her gang have a whole twelve hours to relax before the clock ticks back to four. In the time being, Katniss and Peeta have a very long talk about their futures. In summary of the long conversation, Peeta is trying to make it clear to Katniss that she is better off being the winner of the Hunger Games, for she has more people that depend on her back at home. It finally clicks to Katniss that she should be fighting for herself, rather than for somebody else life out in the arena. After the conversation, Katniss goes into a deep sleep about what life would be like without the Hunger Games.

Catching Fire #23

For 5/12/11 when Blogger was down
Catching Fire
Pg.326-339
5/12/11

Summary: Katniss comes to the understanding that the arena is a clock, and at every hour a new horror takes place. Katniss hurries to wake the rest of her team up in order to flee from their next “horror” which is only about a half an hour away (according to the arena). Nobody in Katniss’s alliance has any really good ideas, and therefore, they all decide to head down to the Cornucopia, or the center of the arena/ clock. When they arrive, Katniss takes a peak at the remaining supplies and weapons left at the Cornucopia from other tributes after day one. Katniss doesn’t find anything useful, but Beetee on the other hand finds a wire that helped him win his first Hunger Games. Katniss and her gang try to get some rest for they have a few hours before the horrors will reach their location, but during their first moment of silence, Katniss can sense something is wrong. She loads her bow and arrow, and turns around to find Wires dead with her throat sliced open. Katniss and her alliance scurry to get their weapons ready and find themselves in a battle with some of the Career tributes. Fortunately, other that Wires, nobody is killed on Katniss’s side, and only Finnick suffers from taking a knife to the leg while protecting Peeta. On the other hand, Katniss and her tribe kill two tributes, and are now ever so closer to wining their second Hunger Games. However, once the rest of the Careers scurry off, the whole arena starts to spin. The arena isn’t slowly spinning, but it spins to the point where objects are flying all around, and Katniss has to cling into the sand to avoid being catapulted across the arena. However, the spinning stops before anybody is hurt, but now Katniss and her alliance have no clue where they stand on the clock, and which direction leads to the noon part of the arena. Joanna decides to just pick a random direction in hope that she is right, and the others of the gang following her footsteps. They travel until they reach the forest, where they split up to get water and to set up a small camp. However, as Katniss and Finnick are filling up their canteens with water, Katniss hears a scream. Katniss drops everything and starts running towards the sight of the scream that sounds ever so familiar, like her little sister Prim’s scream!

Catching Fire #22

Catching Fire
Pg.311-326
5/9/11

Summary: Katniss jumps out to save Peeta from the mutant monkey morphling. Katniss is successful and bats the morphling away leaving Peeta to come over and stab the creature multiple times. Katniss loads her bow and arrow, turns around and is ready to kill more of these strange monkeys, but finds all of the morphlings to be fleeing away. Then the strangest thing happens; the half dead morphling starts to talk as if the Capital didn’t fully erase the human side to this creature. Katniss tries to save this poor human/ creature that only moments ago was trying to kill, but unfortunately, the morphing doesn’t make it out alive. However, Katniss has other things to worry about like the spots where the “fog” hit her skin for they have stopped hurting, but now itch beyond belief. Katniss tells her teammates not to scratch but has a hard time lessening to her own command. Katniss prays to Haymitch for something to help ease the pain, and in seconds she has some cream for the whole gang that stops the itching and causes the wounds to scab. Katniss wants to get out of the jungle, for she now thinks it is just a death trap, so she, Peeta and Finnick head down to the Cornucopia which is located by the ocean in the middle of the arena. However, Katniss finds that she isn’t the only one who wants to get out of the jungle for Johanna Mason, a District 5 tribute, Wiress and Beetee, “nuts” and “volts”, are at the Cornucopia as well. Both alliances don’t end up trying to kill each other, but rather end up joining forces because apparently Finnick and Joanna are good friends. Although Finnick is happy, Katniss and Peeta on the other hand would have preferred the two alliances didn’t join forces, mostly because Wiress and Beetee are “messed up” at the moment. Out of nowhere the two of them, Wiress and Beetee, would start repeating “Tick tock, tick tock” as if they were brainwashed. However, when Katniss is on guard later that night, it clicks to her why Wiress and Beetee are saying “Tick tock”. The arena is a circle, and Katniss realizes that the “fog”, morphlings, and thunder storms only happen in certain parts of the arena at certain times, always the same order, meaning that the whole arena could be a giant clock showing you the time of day!

Catching Fire #21

Catching Fire
Pg.298-310
5/4/11

Summary: Katniss is running as fast as she can away from the “fog” with her startled teammates who are still in the process of waking up. However, the pace Katniss and her alliance were running isn’t quite fast enough for “fog” is staring to gain on them. In addition, when Katniss looked back at Peeta to see how he was doing, she learns that the “fog’s” only side effects isn’t just blistering, but rather after its initial impact, the green “fog” burrows down your skin to your nerves and causes uncontrollable spasms. To make matters worse, the “fog”, which Katniss now refers to as poison, causes you to stumble and trip, making you slower and a bigger target to the fog as it starts to get to your legs. Peeta and Mags are in the back of the pack, and Katniss knows she has to do something in order for them to survive so Katniss carries Peeta while Finnick carries Mags as they try their best to keep ahead of the poison. Unfortunately, Mags has had enough with the slow but painful affect the poison has on her body, so she gives up and runs directly into the “fog” instantly committing suicide. At this point in time, Katniss, Peeta, and Finnick are pushing the limits of what their uncontrollable limbs and bodies can take, but they are getting closer and closer to the Cornucopia, the place of safely where they can jump into the water and avoid the poisonous fog. It takes all of their strength, but Katniss and her team managed to literally crawl their ways down the mountainous jungle and into the salt water alive. The salt water stings, but their wounds slowly start to heal, and after a while, Katniss and Peeta have gained enough strength to help revive Finnick. However, just when Katniss thought all of the Capitals tricks were over, there is yet another problem in their way of getting back to their camp. Apparently, while Katniss, Peeta and Finnick were regaining their strength by the Cornucopia, monkeys silently crawled out onto the branches of trees and were awaiting an attack on Peeta. Katniss and Finnick see the monkeys in advance, but fail to tell Peeta not to make eye contact with the monkeys. In a split second the monkeys, which are actually robots of the dead tributes that the Capital made to look like monkeys, jump out of their trees and are diving towards Peeta. There is only one thing Katniss can do to save Peeta, jump in fount of the monkeys and take the dead on hit!

Catching Fire #20

Catching Fire
Pg.288-298
5/2/11

Summary: Katniss rushes over to aid Peeta as he falls to the ground. She screams his name over and over but gets no response. Finnick comes over, pushes Katniss a side, and starts CPR. In no time, Peeta is back on his feet and Katniss is grateful to have Finnick on her side. Even though Peeta is weak, the pack decides to keep moving near the force field for water. They walk and walk until Mags, the elder in their alliance, needs a break. Durring their break, Katniss decides shimmy up a tree, one that is just a bit taller than the rest, to get a feel for how close they may be to a source of water. But when Katinss comes back down from the tree, she only has bad news for her friends; the arena is a circle and they have just been walking around and around spots they have already been through all day. Unfortunately when Katniss is ready to keep moving inland, everybody is so tired and decide to set up camp for the night. The alliance splits up to fetch some supplies and in no time they have set up a decent size camp. In addition, Mags weaved some beads and pillows out of palm tree leaves that will add nice comfort for a nights rest after a long day. Later in the day, Katniss receives a gift from Haymitch. There is only one problem, Katniss and her gang don’t have a clue what this hollow piece of metal is. Luckily, Katniss vaguely remembers her father having many of these contraptions in her back yard, and finally, she comes to understand that her gift is a “spile” (a device used in maple trees to remove the sap for maple syrup). Katniss is unaware why Haymitch gave this gift to her, mostly because there aren’t any maple trees in this jungle, but decides to try the spile out on the nearest tree. Haymitch is one smart man for her was able to figure out that the only fresh water in the arena was in the trees, and in no time Katniss and her alliance have a bucket full of water. With the relief of now having water, Katniss goes hunting and brings back some meat for a well-deserved meal. After Katniss’s feast, the anthem comes on and after the first day eight tributes were killed from the battle at the Cornucopia. After the anthem, night rolls in and Katniss, along with her partners in crime, fall right to sleep. However, Katniss is awoken early by a thunder storm, followed by a strange green “fog” which isn’t fog at all. This “fog” turns out to be some poison that when made contact with the human body causes blistering, and just when Katniss thought she would have a nice evenings rest, she finds herself, along with her alliance, running for their lives!

Catching Fire #19

Catching Fire
Pg.267-279
4/28/11

Summary: Katniss is on her platform, trying to get a sense for where she is. All that Katniss sees is water, except for an island with twelve spokes and the Cornucopia in the middle as well as woods way off in the distance. In no time the gong sounds, and the Hunger Games begins. Katniss swims to the Cornucopia and is one of the first to successfully arrive on land. She races up to get the bow and arrow, before coming back down and running into Finnick. Katniss is about ready to kill Finnick, but as she loads her bow and arrow, she sees that he is wearing Haymitch’s bracelet. Katniss believes that Finnick wearing Haymitch’s bracelet as a sign from Haymich to trust Finnick. Katniss gives Finnick a chance to gain her trust, and just as she begins to talk to him, Finnick kills and incoming tribute, saving Katniss’s life. They decide to work together and go get Peeta, who is still on his starting spot, since he cannot swim. Finnick tells Katniss to stay on watch for any incoming tributes while he goes out to get Peeta. Although it takes Katniss a second to agree, she trusts Finnick, and in no time, Peeta is on the beach alive. Katniss, Finnick, and Peeta are just about to run into the woods, away from the rest of the tributes when they spot poor old Mags from District 4 almost at the beach knowing that is they leave her, she will be dead in no time. The group decides to wait for Mags, and when she arrives onto the beach, Finnick scoops her up, and they are off into the jungle. Katniss and Peeta have never encountered a jungle before, but it doesn’t take them long to discover that jungles are very hot and humid. To make the long hike even worse for Katniss and Peeta, the jungle has a steady incline. However, do to their workouts with Haymitch, Katniss and Peeta are able to make it about half way up the “never ending” mountain before stopping for a break. While on their break, Katniss climbs up a tree to take a look at the beach bellow and finds the crystal clear water from before the Hunger Games started to be a purplish color from of all of the blood and gore of the killings. Also, due to all of the matching uniforms this year, Katniss is unaware of what to tell her alliance bellow on who is dead, and who is still alive. The alliance votes to keep moving in search of water, which they believe will be on the other side of the mountain, when Katniss spots a strange square shape in midair that doesn’t appear to be moving as she is moving, meaning that it is human made and there is no other side to this mountain. Unfortunately, before Katniss can tell her alliance about her observation, Peeta is shocked and falls to the ground. When Katniss rushes over to see if Peeta is alright, she notices that his gasping breath for air while climbing the mountain has now fallen silent!

Catching Fire #18

Catching Fire
Pg.253-263
4/24/11

Summary: Katniss is still smoldering when she talks to Caesar about her dress and her stylist Cinna. Caesar is so amazed by Katniss’s dress that he has Cinna rise and take a bow. However, this was a bad move by Cinna, for the Mockingjay is frowned upon by the Capital, since Katniss has something to do about it, and he just indirectly showed the Capital that he was on Katniss’s side. Unfortunately, Katniss has no time to take all of the attention off of Cinna before the bell rings, signifying that Katniss’s interview is over, and Peeta walks up to the stage. Peeta wastes no time to capture the crowd’s attention when he asks Caesar if he can keep a secret. Caesar nods his head and Peeta tells the whole world that he and Katniss are already married. I am not quite sure if Peeta is bluffing, but apparently they secretly got married a couple weeks before they were informed about going back into the Hunger Games. In addition, Peeta also says something about how he guesses their baby will never have a chance to live his/her life. Immediately, the crowd goes silent. It takes the crowd a while to react, but Katniss and Peeta know that there isn’t a single person in the world, blood thirsty or not, who wouldn’t be the slightest bit mad at the Capital for having a pregnant woman, Katniss, enter the Hunger Games. The crowed goes wild. They start shouting and throwing things around, and don’t stop until the anthem comes on and the tributes do something never before seen during the Hunger Games; hold hands showing that they are all one. This gets the already chaotic crowd going again, and before the anthem even stops the Capital forces the producers to shut off the cameras, for they don’t want the rest of the world to know about the tributes silent rebel. Within minutes all of the tributes are escorted back to the hotel, and the crowed is forced to go home. On the elevator ride up to their room, Katniss and Peeta look back on what just happened before their eyes. Katniss isn’t a bit upset with Peeta for telling the world about the wedding and baby without her permission. When they get out of the elevator, Haymitch is right by their side. This may be the last time Katniss and Peeta see Haymitch, but there is not much to be said. They give each other their love, and Katniss and Peeta try to get some sleep on their last night before the Hunger Games. However, just like their first Hunger Games, Katniss and Peeta don’t get a minute of sleep. Dawn arrives and Katniss is separated from Peeta to travel into the arena. Cinna tries to get Katniss to eat, but can only get Katniss to drink some water. In no time Katniss is in her capsule ready to be launched into her second Hunger Games. But before Katniss can leave the world with something good on her mind, three Peacemakers come into the room and knock Cinna out cold before dragging is bloody body out of the room, all the while Katniss is three feet away watching Cinna go, and isn’t able to do anything about the tragedy. Soon enough Katniss is shot into the arena, and the only thing that comes to her mind when she hits wet ground is, “This is no place for a girl on fire.”

Catching Fire #17

Catching Fire
Pg.238-252
4/21/11

Summary: The shock on the Gamemakers face is immediate after Katniss hangs the dummy. Some gasp while others wine glasses drop out of their hands and shatter on the ground. Katniss is dismissed and she goes to meet up with her team. When Katniss shares the news about what she has done, her teams reaction is almost identical to the Gamemakers. However, Peeta is thankful because his performance didn’t quite go as planned meaning it took the Gamemakers attention off of him. Katniss shortly heads to bed after the team dinner, and for the first time in months Peeta sleeps by her side. In addition, they both get their first well nights rest since their first Hunger Games together. After waking up the next day, Katniss and Peeta receive a letter form Haymitch informing them the interview lessons were cancelled, leaving Katniss and Peeta with the whole day to themselves. Peeta decides to go have picnic lunch on the roof and Katniss tags along. Katniss end up having a well-deserved relaxing day that she wishes will never end. However, it is already time for bed since tomorrow night the interviews with all of the tributes will be held. Katniss is woken up quite early in order for the prep team to “beatify” her. Katniss is given her wedding dress, which President Snow is making her where, and heads over to the City Circle. When Katniss arrives, she gets many mixed comments about her dress. Some are good, while others are quite immature. However, when Katniss is being interviewed by Caesar, everybody’s perspective of her dress diminishes. For when Katniss twirls to show off her dress, Cinna somehow gets the dress to ignite on fire and turn into a beautiful mockingjay!

Catching Fire #16

Catching Fire
Pg.218-237
4/18/11

Summary: Katniss and Peeta have a quiet dinner with their new Avox Darius. After, Katniss and Peeta watch the recap of the Opening Ceremonies. Katniss shortly heads off to bed after the Ceremonies are over, but has many nightmares that always end with somebody’s tongue bleeding or getting severed from the rest of their head. Katniss decides to sleep in up until the last minutes before she has to be downstairs at the Training Center. Katniss really isn’t looking forward to the training sections. She has been told by Haymitch to try and make friends since everybody already knows everyone except for Katniss and Peeta because they have just won the last Hunger Games last year. Katniss tries her best and comes to like the tributes from District 3, Wiress and Beetee, when she talks to them over at the knot tying station. However when Katniss meets back up with Peeta during the lunch break, Peeta has different opinions about who they should team up with. Katniss and Peeta decide to sit with all of the other tributes at the big table they have put together for lunch, even though Katniss was highly pushing against the decision, to try and make more friends that could possibly be on their side once in the Hunger Games. Katniss meets Chaff, one of Peeta’s new friends, and realizes he isn’t as crazy as she had thought before, and could be a great teammate. After lunch Katniss does the “edible insect” station with the tributes from District 4 before being invited to make hammocks with the tributes from District 1. Katniss gives up on trying to make friends because she thinks Haymitch will just laugh when she tells him, “I want and eighty-year-old [Mags form District 4] and Nuts and Volts [Wiress and Beetee from District 3] for my allies.” Katniss decides to go over and shoot some arrows to get over the frustration she is feeling inside of her. However, once she is finished shooting, she turns around and finds all of the eyes on her in disbelief. Katniss realizes she should have just started with the archery station and let her new friends approach her. Anyways, the training section is now over and it is time for private sessions where the tributes have fifteen minutes to show the Gamemakers their skills. Of course, being the girl from District 12, Katniss is the last tribute of the day leaving her with plenty of time to think of how she will amaze the Gamemakers. Katniss goes into the room to find the Gamemakers’ to be a bit upset and thinks that Peeta made them mad somehow. Katniss decides to blow off the plan she had to amaze the Gamemakers’ and do something that will really make the Gamemakers’ mad in order for them to forget whatever Peeta did to them before. Katniss first kills a dummy with a noose. Afterwards, Katniss retrieves some fake blood and blows the Gamemakers’ away when she writes “SENECA CRANE” in big letters across the dead dummy.

Catching Fire #15

Catching Fire
Pg.204-217
4/12/11

Summary: Katniss goes to see Flavius, Venia, and Octavia, her prep-team, to get ready for the opening ceremony. What Katniss didn’t realize was how sad her prep-team was because they had really gotten to know Katniss, and became heart-broken when they heard she had to go back into the arena. Even though Katniss was touched, she got sick of all the tears, so when Cinna walks into the door Katniss threatens to kill him if he cries. Cinna doesn’t cry, and takes Katniss over to the changing room where she puts on her new dress for the ceremonies. Katniss looks amazing. The dress illuminates to look just like a fire and matches the coal theme of mining in District 12. Katniss decides to go down onto the ground floor to wait with Peeta for their chariot. However, Peeta hasn’t arrived yet, and before she knows it another tribute from District 4, Finnick Odair, is right next to her. Apparently, to many young woman Finnick is beautiful with his, “Golden skin and bronze-colored hair and those incredible eyes” but Katniss personally isn’t attracted to him so when Finnick tries to flirt with Katniss, she isn’t impressed. Soon enough Peeta meets Katniss on the ground floor, just in time as well, for their chariot has just arrived. They get in to the chariot, and are on their way to the opening ceremony while following Cinna’s advice on not to wave and smile, but to simply look ahead. At last they are back in the City Circle, and Katniss leads Peeta into the Training Center where they meet back up with their team. While in the Training Center Katniss and Peeta meet their new Avox (the person who tends them right up until the games). Their Avox looks to be the twin of their last Avox in the Hunger Games, and for some reason the man looks familiar to Katniss. Then it comes to Katniss, their Avox is Darius, the man who lay unconscious in the square while the life bled out of Gale!

Catching Fire #14

Catching Fire
Pg.188-203
4/10/11

Summary: Katniss is on a train with Peeta and her team headed to the Capital. At first, there is a very sad and quiet tone flowing around the cabins. Not much is said and everybody heads to bed. However, Katniss wakes up to a nightmare about the Hunger Games and walks out of her room to find Peeta watching clips on previous Hunger Games trying to gain knowledge on their new completion. He has watched all of the clips with the tributes that will be returning to this year’s Hunger Games so Katniss pushes Peeta to watch the clip where Haymitch wins the Hunger Games. The first thing Katniss realizes while watching the clip is how beautiful the location was where the Hunger Games were held at the time when Haymitch played. For instance, there were meadows with a snow-caped mountain where you would never once think about hundreds of children dying at your feet. Also, Katniss discovers that Haymitch was very intelligent. He was the only tribute to really explored the map. On his journey throughout the Games, he joined an alliance with the other District 12 tribute and they headed for the unknown “end” of the map. Haymitch knew there had to be an end to this place somewhere and sure enough it ended at a massive canyon. Coincidently, when Haymitch was walking on the edge of the canyon, a pebble fell into the canyon, and when it seemed like the pebble fell forever, it shot back up out of the canyon. Haymitch was able to use his knowledge of the canyon, which had been made by the Capital for the Hunger Games, to win the Games. When it was just down to him and the other District 12 tribute, Haymitch got the tribute angry and ran toward the canyon. When the tribute threw her ax at Haymitch he jumped into the canyon. The tribute had thought she won when all of a sudden the ax came flying out of the canyon and into the tributes skull leaving Haymitch the victor. The part that shocked Katniss and Peeta was how similar Haymitch’s experience in the Hunger Games was to theirs when District 12 teamed up both times and won by playing the Capital. Katniss is now sure that two people who have caused the Capital so much trouble can think of a way to get Peeta home alive!

Catching Fire #13

Catching Fire
Pg.174-187
4/6/11

Summary: Before Katniss even comes to her senses after the devastating news she heard about herself, and either Peeta or Haymich, going back into The Hunger Games, she is running faster than she ever has before trying to get out of District 12. However, Katninss doesn’t make it too far because of the new rule of fence always being on, so she runs into an abandoned house. She stuffs a piece of clothing in her mouth and just screams at the top of her lungs until she gets all of her anger out. Katniss pulls herself together and goes to talk to Haymitch about their newly formed situation. They conclude that if Katniss and Peeta go back in to The Hunger Games, and their can only be one winner between the two of them, this time Peeta will be the winner. Katniss stagers home, for she is now drunk from having a drink with Haymich, to find her mother and Prim waiting at the door to give her a big hug. Katniss tries to stay strong, but immediately breaks down internally when her family tries to comfort her. Gale is also in her house, and tries to convince Katniss that is still not too late to run away into the woods. Unfortunately, Katniss isn’t in the mood to talk so she heads up to bed. When Katniss wakes up it is already late afternoon, and Haymitch and Peeta are waiting downstairs to talk. Throughout the whole conversation on what their plan is going to be, Peeta is arguing with them the whole time. They decide to all work out, and gain some well needed weight to prepare for The Hunger Games. In no time the date of the reaping comes, and Katniss doesn’t even have a chance to talk to Gale about all she has learned. The names are read and Katniss and Haymitch are going to the games, but of course Peeta volunteers to take Haymitch’s spot. Before Katniss has a chance to say anymore last goodbyes, she is loaded onto the train with her team and is in course to the Capital.

Catching Fire #12

Catching Fire
Pg.164-173
4/4/11

Summary: Katniss is starting to get sick of lying in bed all day because of her injury, and just wants to get outside and do something. However, she is surprised by her makeup and hair crew that arrives three weeks early to prepare Katniss up for her wedding dress shoots which have moved to that day. Katniss is soon swept away and gets a full makeover that includes hiding the lash on her face from the whip. During Katniss’s makeover, one of the crew members, Octavia, makes a remark about how there has been a shortage of sea food because of the bad weather in District 4 which somehow gets Katniss thinking once again about the uprisings. Katniss doesn’t have much time to think, though, because she is brought downstairs and the photo shoot begins. Katniss wasn’t expecting the photo shoot to take as long as it did because by the end of the pictures for the first dress she was already exhausted. After the photo shoot, Katniss goes in search of Gale to inform him about the news she has learned from Bonnie and Twill about District 13, but comes up empty handed. Instead, she talks too Haymitch about the uprisings and District 13. Haymitch is unsure about the rumors Katniss heard from Bonnie and Twill about District 13, but doesn’t want to bring Katniss’s hopes down so he changes the topic. Haymitch decides to tell Katniss that her wedding dress pictures may be on the mandatory broadcast tonight. Katniss is stunned. She never realized that the producers at the capital could get the photos all the way from District 12 in a day, and put them in the program. Sure enough, the photos were the opening part in the program. However, the news only got worse from there. Since this year is the 75th anniversary of The Hunger Games, also known as the “third Quarter Quell”, the capital changed The Hunger Games (just like they did on the first and second Quarter Quell), but this time it is different. For the third Quaker Quell, Districts will have to choose both a boy and girl tribute (person to have won the games) and send them back to The Hunger Games for a rematch. It takes Katniss a while for the fact to come across her that the only other tribute from District 13 is Haymitch, meaning that Katniss, being the only girl tribute from District 12, is automatically going back into The Hunger Games!

Catching Fire #11

Caching Fire
Pg.151-163
3/31/11

Summary: Katniss is in shock that the electric fence is actually turned on. In her passed years, the fence only went on from time to time, but would always shut itself off after a while. However, this time it is not shutting off, and Katniss is getting worried! To make matters worse, Katniss didn’t make any remarks to her family about the possibility of her going into the woods, meaning if she didn’t return soon, Prim and her mother would become worried. Katniss decides to use what she learned from Ruth in the Hunger Games and climbs up into a nearby tree. From there she leaps over the fence and into a snow pile. When Katniss gets up she realizes that she underestimated the height of the tree, and could possibly have broken a limb. She tries to overcome the pain, and limps home, only to run into more trouble. Two Peacekeepers, who apparently had been waiting for about an hour, were in her house speaking to Katniss’s family along with Haymitch and Peeta. The Peacekeepers asked Katniss where she had been, and Katniss had to make up a story about her going to the market. Her family doesn’t give Katniss much support in her story because they are the first to interrogate her about an incorrect fact. Katniss admits she is wrong just to get the topic off of her, and the Peacekeepers chip in on why they are at her house. The Peacekeepers arrived at Katniss’s house to inform her that the fence will now be turned on 24-7, which coincidently Katniss is already aware of. Soon enough the Peacekeepers leave and Katniss can stop acting. She moans and immediately her mother realizes that something is wrong. However, they all knew that then wasn’t the time to talk about it because somebody would probably hear them so Ms. Everdeen takes Katniss up to bed. For the next few days Katniss spends most of her time in bed trying to get over the pain from whatever she injured after jumping out of the tree. The thought of District 13 wanders back through her head, and she realizes that people could still live there. She remembers hearing a news broadcast about District 3 is running low on graphite, and how they were going to start digging in the old District 13 mines but the mines were still too toxic. It wasn’t the fact that people were going to mine in District 13 that caught Katniss’s attention, but that same mockingjay wing that appears in every picture, was in the picture with the reporter broadcasting in District 13.

Catching Fire #10

Catching Fire
Pg. 139-150
3/28/11

Summary: Katniss is about to kill the Peacekeeper who had her mockingjay, when another voice speaks from behind her. Katniss orders the other Peacekeeper to come around where Katniss can see her, only to find a harmless girl who seems to be injured. Katniss puts her bow and arrow down, and finds out that these two girls are from District 8! She realizes that this is the perfect time to get the inside scoop on the uprising, and starts asking the girls questions. The two girls, Twill and Bonnie, are not Peacekeepers, but rather stole the uniforms from the factory they both worked at. Twill and Bonnie both escaped form the uprising shortly after the factory they were working in blew up and killed all of their family. They are expected to be dead from the explosion, so they thought this would be the perfect time to run away from District 8, and head to the unknown District 13. Katniss brings the starving girls inside, and gives them some well needed food before returning to the conversation of the uprising. Twill and Bonnie explain to Katniss that they’ve been hearing rumors about people still living underground in District 13, out of harm’s way, after the bombings a while back. Katniss highly doubts that there are people in District 13, but simply doesn’t want to break the girls hearts after coming this far. She decides to help the girls in their journey by giving them the rest of her catch from the day, and teaching Twill and Bonnie how to hunt and build a fire. After, Katniss has to return home before anybody gets suspicious about her actions. Twill and Bonnie thank Katniss for all that she has done for them, and they go their own ways. On the way back home, Katniss mind is spinning out of control for all of the things Twill and Bonnie had mentioned. All that comes to her mind is how much President Snow has played her to keep Katniss from impacting any other Districts. Day time is fading for Katniss, and she picks up the pass to get to her house before dusk. However, when Katniss walks up to the fence, she is “jerked” back from the buzz indicating that the fence is alive with electricity!

Catching Fire #9

Catching Fire
Pg.120-135
3/10/11

Summary: Katniss finds herself dead asleep on the table next to Gale. Peeta eventually wakes her up, and sends her off to bed. While in bed, Katniss has a horrid dream of The Hunger Games, and wakes up with sweat pouring down her face. She realizes that it is already dawn, and there is a blizzard occurring outside, so she walks downstairs to check on Gale. She could tell that the medication was wearing off. Her mother gives Gale a “snow coat”, and Katniss can immediately see the decrees in swelling. Katniss asks her mother where Peeta is because she wants to talk to him and Haymitch more about the plan, and finds out that he has gone home because of the weather. Once the storm passed a few days later, Katniss goes out to the Square with Peeta. She is expecting it to be deserted because of the recent storm so they can talk, but is totally wrong. They find all new construction made by the Peacekeepers, including an official whipping post. They decide to go back split up, and go back home. On Katniss’s way back home, she realizes just how empty the streets were. However, the storm caused the mines to shut down, and the prices of food to rise, which is starving many families. Anyways, Katniss cannot fall to sleep later that night, and decides to go out into the woods. She uses high-tech snow gear because of all of the snow they have gotten, and wonders out into the woods using the mining trails. She wants to go back to the pond and remember all of the good memories she and her dad had there, for this may be Katniss’s last time she goes into the woods with all of the new construction. However, she is stopped short by the unmistakable sound of a gun. She turns around, armed with her bow and arrow, to find a Peacekeeper. However, the woman drops her gun and holds something in her hand. Katniss’s mockingjay!

Catching Fire #8

Catching Fire
Pg.106-120
3/9/11

Summary: Katniss jumps in front of Gale, and takes the full impact of the whip right to her face. Luckily, Haymitch comes to the scene before Katniss is beaten anymore, and rats out the man for what he has done. Peeta also comes to the rescue to try and get Katniss out of dodge, but Katniss was too focused on saving Gale. She ends up taking Gale to her house, where her mother takes a good look at him. Katniss is terrified because she convinced herself that all of this nonsense happened because of her. Plus, when Katniss asks her mother if Gale will be all right, she doesn’t get an answer. However, once Ms. Everdeen (Katniss’s mother) bandages Gale up, he starts to regain his consciousness. Ms. Everdeen decides to cut down on the pain medication because of the speed of his recovery, but Katniss pushes her mother to give Gale the original medication because she just wants this whole thing to be over with. Later in the evening, somebody knocks on Katniss’s door. She knows it could only be the Peacekeepers, but she doesn’t know if they are here to help, or to just make matters worse. It turns out that they were there actually there to help, and they gave Katniss some pills to give Gale, and sure enough, he talks for the first time since he was whipped. He is able to pull off a quick smile to Katniss before the pain killers kick in, and he falls back to asleep.

Catching Fire #7

Catching Fire
Pg.90-105
2/24/11

Summary: Katniss wants to talk to Gale, and tell him about everything that is going on. She decides to go deep into the woods to tell him, this way nobody will hear them. She makes a path for him that leads to a small little hut built by the lake in the woods. Eventually, Gale does arrive, and Katniss asks him if he will run away, deep into the woods forever. Surprisingly, Gale’s immediate response was yes. However, once Katniss spills the beans that Peeta would also be joining, there is a little more hesitation. Katniss makes another bad decision while trying to re-convince Gale by telling him about the possible uprising in District 8. This changes Gale’s decision to a complete no, and now he is furious at Katniss for why she would want to leave everybody behind. In the end, Gale just abruptly exits the hut, leaving Katniss alone, with her hopes diminishing. Katniss tries to keep the hope alive by finding, and asking Peeta what he thinks about her plan. Remarkably, Peeta says yes. However, after Katniss asks, they hear something in “the square”. They rush over to see what is going on, but once Peeta takes a first look, he tells Katniss to go home, for she doesn’t want to see this. Of course, when Peeta says this, it only makes Katniss more eager to see the action. Peeta can’t hold Katniss back, and she runs out, only to see Gale in the middle of the square, hung on a cross and unconscious. Katniss doesn’t understand what is going on, until a man raises a whip in his arm.

Catching Fire #6

Catching Fire
Pg.75-89
2/21/11

Summary: Katniss, at first, doesn’t take the news well that she didn’t do enoughto escape marring Peeta; but then gets a thought of her breaking out and going to live in the woods and getting away from this mess that brings her spirits right back up. Katniss and Peeta are now in the dining area, which is just filled with sampling tables. Katniss wants to try it all so she walks around and takes only a single bit of everything that she can possibly find. However, even this method brings her to a stop long before she gets close to making her way all around the room. Katniss wants to keep eating, but dances with Peeta for a while before it is time to go. They get on the train, and are now headed to District 12 for the Harvest Festival. For the first time in months, Katniss makes it through the night without having a single nightmare. Katniss and Peeta arrive at District 12, and are taken to the Mayors house for a dinner, where Katniss gets to briefly catch up with the Mayor’s daughter who she hasn’t seen in forever. Her time doesn’t last long for she is swept away to get ready for the dinner. When she is heading to her room she walks by the Mayor’s office and sticks her head in to say hello. However, he is not there, but the television glared in the corner. On the TV was the news, and apparently, there is an uprising developing in District 8!

Catching Fire #5

Catching Fire
Pg.63-74
1/20/11

Summary: Katniss and Peeta are rushed into the Justice Building, where they are safe from the angry crowd outside. Haymitch joins them, and he takes them in some storage room located in the Justice Building, and asks Katniss and Peeta what exactly happened out there. Katniss tells them everything. She tells them about President Snow, how much danger they are in, and Peeta snaps. He had enough with people keeping secrets from other people that they were so close to, and uses Katniss and Haymitch as an example. However, they do end up getting over this argument, and just in time for they have to get ready for the dinner. Surprisingly, the dinner actually goes quite well, and in no time Katniss and Peeta are on the train to the next District. This same routine of lessening to The Speech of Honor, giving a thank you speech, going to dinner and then getting right back onto the train was going well in all Districts (12-1), and now it was time for their stop at the Capital. Peeta ends up fake proposing to Katniss during the ceremony, and Katniss thought that this would get President Snow to believe about the whole “love story”. However, Katniss was wrong; when she looks into his eyes for that reassuring nod, she is rejected by a “imperceptible shake of his head”!

Catching Fire #4

Catching Fire
Pg.45-62
1/17/10

Summary: Katniss and Peeta head to Rues hometown, District 11, for the first stop of the Victors Tour. On the way Katniss losses herself, and bursts out to Cinna that nobody cares about her planning. Katniss feels so bad that she jumps out of the train to get away from things for a bit while the train was being fixed. Surprisingly, Peeta comes out to meet her and see if everything is alright. Katniss is relived when they decided to just be friends, since Peeta knew about her and Gale. Anyway, Katniss has no time at all before she arrives at District 11, and is rushed to the gathering spot where the Victor’s Tour begins. Peeta gives his speech, and everything is going great, until Katniss made eye contact with one of Rues sisters. The sorrow on the poor girls face made Katniss feel ashamed of herself, so she decided to go make a quick speech herself. Katniss makes a great speech, in my opinion, but she is very worried that what she said will go against with what President Snow wanted her to do when her visited her last week.

Catching Fire #3

Catching Fire
Pg.30-44
1/12/11

Summary: President Snow leaves, and Katniss’s mom comes rushing into the office to see what the scoop is. Katniss simply lies to her mom, and tells her that President Snow interviews every victor of the Hunger Games. After, Katniss enjoys her short, but sweet alone time she has in the bath tub; her stylists come rushing in to get her ready for the tour. At first, they are disappointed with Katniss for not listening to their advice, but then the stylists’ compromise, and turn her back into her beautiful self. Once the stylists are done, Katniss makes her way downstairs and finds Cinna, her costume designer, waiting to give her the outfit she will be wearing during the tour. However, before Katniss tries on her outfit, she is taken outside for a shot of her describing her outfit, that technically she was supposed to design. After the shot, Peeta comes over, and they kiss for the first time in months. Later, they are whisked away to the train station where they will once again leave their families to go on their tour all over Panem. On the way back to the Capital, Katniss tells Haymitch everything about what happened with President Snow. Unfortunately, Haymitch only has negative feedback, and tells Katniss that the camera crew will probably follow her and Peeta for the rest of their lives, meaning that Katniss may have to marry Peeta!

Catching Fire #2

Catching Fire
Pg.18-29
1/9/11

Summary: Katniss and President Snow sit down and start talking. All of a sudden, things take a turn for the worst when President Snow starts talking about the berries in the Hunger Games. Katniss braces herself for the conversation because she knows that he is going to question her about Peeta and Gale. President Snow is worried that Katniss’s actions in the Hunger Games will start an uprising, which could lead to a revolution that would change Panem. Katniss knows that she is in trouble, when she tells President Snow that Peeta made the cookies they were eating during their conversation because this gets President Snow talking about her and Peeta being “lovers”, and eventually on the topic of Gale. President Snow cut to the chase when he basically told Katniss that he knew about her and Gale going hunting on Sundays, and that they are more than just friends. Katniss is stunned by how President Snow knows about this, but keeps the shock shielded behind her poker face. Katniss assures Presisdent Snow she will prove to him that she and Peeta are lovers on the tour, and they wrap up the conversation. Just as President Snow is walking out the door, he turns to Katniss and says, “By the way, I know about the kiss” that came out of nowhere one day by Gale while hunting.

Chatching Fire #1

Catching Fire
Pg.3-17
1/6/11

Summary: Katniss is home, and starts to return to her old life, but she can’t. Her life has changed so much with being wealthy, and getting a new house that she gets really bored for all of the things that she used to keep her family alive, she almost never has to do anymore. However, she still goes hunting, and the food that she catches gets distributed between her family and Gales family. Katniss goes to the market and buys the groceries and supplies for the next few days, but while she is at it she gets Haymitch a bottle of alcohol as a thank you gift. After, she walks over to his house (which is right down the street from her new house) and gives him the present before the camera men come over to prepare for the upcoming tour. Katniss ends up having to wake Haymitch up for he was passed out drunk on the table. When she finally gets him up, Peeta stops by to wake him up as well because technically he was supposed to do it in the first place. This was an awkward moment for Katniss because she wasn’t expecting to encounter Peeta, and she really didn’t know what to do. Anyway, Katniss returns home to a guest awaiting her inside. Katniss knows it is somebody from the Capital for the way they are dressed, but she is still quite nervous. She walks into the room and finds President Snow, the president of the districts, in her study room!

The Hunger Games Pg.260-End

The Hunger Games
Pg.260-274 (End)
1/3/11

Summary: The celebration begins in the Capital where Katniss and Peeta take the stage with their beautiful outfits made by Cinna. However, Katniss and Peeta aren’t so excited because they know that the Gamemakers aren’t so found of them due to their attempt of tricking them during the Hunger Games, and now if the producers decide to show some specific parts in the video that recaps the games, Katniss and Peeta will be in deep trouble. Luckily for Katniss, nothing too bad is shown, and so far they are safe. After the celebration, Katniss and Peeta are sent to bed before they really even have a chance to talk to each other. Katniss decides to sneak out of her room in search for Peeta, but ends up unsuccessful due to the suspicious noise that she thought was Haymitch. Katniss barely gets any sleep before she is awoken early the next morning to get ready for the interview on the Hunger Games. Katniss was very nervous for this was going to be the time where she and, or Peeta would accidently say something that gets the Gamemakers even more angry with them. To make matters even worse, the interviewer was asking some hard questions, some that almost couldn’t be answered for they would immediately tick off the Gamemakers. However, Katniss and Peeta battle their way through the interview and are reassured that they are safe with hugs from Haymitch. Finally, after all of these days out in the frigid cold, it is time for Katniss and Peeta to head home to District twelve and see their family. On the train back Katniss and Peeta get into a little bit of an argument, which eventually ended up getting big enough that they suddenly weren’t in love anymore. In fact, Katniss and Peeta had returned to the same people they were when they first got elected to be in the Hunger Games. Fortunately, they came together as they pulled up to their small train station in District twelve and walk out as the “lovers of District twelve”, and the Champions of the Seventy-Fourth Hunger Games!
