Catching Fire #11

Caching Fire
Pg.151-163
3/31/11

Summary: Katniss is in shock that the electric fence is actually turned on. In her passed years, the fence only went on from time to time, but would always shut itself off after a while. However, this time it is not shutting off, and Katniss is getting worried! To make matters worse, Katniss didn’t make any remarks to her family about the possibility of her going into the woods, meaning if she didn’t return soon, Prim and her mother would become worried. Katniss decides to use what she learned from Ruth in the Hunger Games and climbs up into a nearby tree. From there she leaps over the fence and into a snow pile. When Katniss gets up she realizes that she underestimated the height of the tree, and could possibly have broken a limb. She tries to overcome the pain, and limps home, only to run into more trouble. Two Peacekeepers, who apparently had been waiting for about an hour, were in her house speaking to Katniss’s family along with Haymitch and Peeta. The Peacekeepers asked Katniss where she had been, and Katniss had to make up a story about her going to the market. Her family doesn’t give Katniss much support in her story because they are the first to interrogate her about an incorrect fact. Katniss admits she is wrong just to get the topic off of her, and the Peacekeepers chip in on why they are at her house. The Peacekeepers arrived at Katniss’s house to inform her that the fence will now be turned on 24-7, which coincidently Katniss is already aware of. Soon enough the Peacekeepers leave and Katniss can stop acting. She moans and immediately her mother realizes that something is wrong. However, they all knew that then wasn’t the time to talk about it because somebody would probably hear them so Ms. Everdeen takes Katniss up to bed. For the next few days Katniss spends most of her time in bed trying to get over the pain from whatever she injured after jumping out of the tree. The thought of District 13 wanders back through her head, and she realizes that people could still live there. She remembers hearing a news broadcast about District 3 is running low on graphite, and how they were going to start digging in the old District 13 mines but the mines were still too toxic. It wasn’t the fact that people were going to mine in District 13 that caught Katniss’s attention, but that same mockingjay wing that appears in every picture, was in the picture with the reporter broadcasting in District 13.

Catching Fire #10

Catching Fire
Pg. 139-150
3/28/11

Summary: Katniss is about to kill the Peacekeeper who had her mockingjay, when another voice speaks from behind her. Katniss orders the other Peacekeeper to come around where Katniss can see her, only to find a harmless girl who seems to be injured. Katniss puts her bow and arrow down, and finds out that these two girls are from District 8! She realizes that this is the perfect time to get the inside scoop on the uprising, and starts asking the girls questions. The two girls, Twill and Bonnie, are not Peacekeepers, but rather stole the uniforms from the factory they both worked at. Twill and Bonnie both escaped form the uprising shortly after the factory they were working in blew up and killed all of their family. They are expected to be dead from the explosion, so they thought this would be the perfect time to run away from District 8, and head to the unknown District 13. Katniss brings the starving girls inside, and gives them some well needed food before returning to the conversation of the uprising. Twill and Bonnie explain to Katniss that they’ve been hearing rumors about people still living underground in District 13, out of harm’s way, after the bombings a while back. Katniss highly doubts that there are people in District 13, but simply doesn’t want to break the girls hearts after coming this far. She decides to help the girls in their journey by giving them the rest of her catch from the day, and teaching Twill and Bonnie how to hunt and build a fire. After, Katniss has to return home before anybody gets suspicious about her actions. Twill and Bonnie thank Katniss for all that she has done for them, and they go their own ways. On the way back home, Katniss mind is spinning out of control for all of the things Twill and Bonnie had mentioned. All that comes to her mind is how much President Snow has played her to keep Katniss from impacting any other Districts. Day time is fading for Katniss, and she picks up the pass to get to her house before dusk. However, when Katniss walks up to the fence, she is “jerked” back from the buzz indicating that the fence is alive with electricity!

Catching Fire #9

Catching Fire
Pg.120-135
3/10/11

Summary: Katniss finds herself dead asleep on the table next to Gale. Peeta eventually wakes her up, and sends her off to bed. While in bed, Katniss has a horrid dream of The Hunger Games, and wakes up with sweat pouring down her face. She realizes that it is already dawn, and there is a blizzard occurring outside, so she walks downstairs to check on Gale. She could tell that the medication was wearing off. Her mother gives Gale a “snow coat”, and Katniss can immediately see the decrees in swelling. Katniss asks her mother where Peeta is because she wants to talk to him and Haymitch more about the plan, and finds out that he has gone home because of the weather. Once the storm passed a few days later, Katniss goes out to the Square with Peeta. She is expecting it to be deserted because of the recent storm so they can talk, but is totally wrong. They find all new construction made by the Peacekeepers, including an official whipping post. They decide to go back split up, and go back home. On Katniss’s way back home, she realizes just how empty the streets were. However, the storm caused the mines to shut down, and the prices of food to rise, which is starving many families. Anyways, Katniss cannot fall to sleep later that night, and decides to go out into the woods. She uses high-tech snow gear because of all of the snow they have gotten, and wonders out into the woods using the mining trails. She wants to go back to the pond and remember all of the good memories she and her dad had there, for this may be Katniss’s last time she goes into the woods with all of the new construction. However, she is stopped short by the unmistakable sound of a gun. She turns around, armed with her bow and arrow, to find a Peacekeeper. However, the woman drops her gun and holds something in her hand. Katniss’s mockingjay!

Catching Fire #8

Catching Fire
Pg.106-120
3/9/11

Summary: Katniss jumps in front of Gale, and takes the full impact of the whip right to her face. Luckily, Haymitch comes to the scene before Katniss is beaten anymore, and rats out the man for what he has done. Peeta also comes to the rescue to try and get Katniss out of dodge, but Katniss was too focused on saving Gale. She ends up taking Gale to her house, where her mother takes a good look at him. Katniss is terrified because she convinced herself that all of this nonsense happened because of her. Plus, when Katniss asks her mother if Gale will be all right, she doesn’t get an answer. However, once Ms. Everdeen (Katniss’s mother) bandages Gale up, he starts to regain his consciousness. Ms. Everdeen decides to cut down on the pain medication because of the speed of his recovery, but Katniss pushes her mother to give Gale the original medication because she just wants this whole thing to be over with. Later in the evening, somebody knocks on Katniss’s door. She knows it could only be the Peacekeepers, but she doesn’t know if they are here to help, or to just make matters worse. It turns out that they were there actually there to help, and they gave Katniss some pills to give Gale, and sure enough, he talks for the first time since he was whipped. He is able to pull off a quick smile to Katniss before the pain killers kick in, and he falls back to asleep.
